Nautical in origin. In the "olden days" of sailing ships, if you broke a
mast, you would limp ashore, cut down a tree to make a pole, lash it in
place of your broken mast as a "jury-rig" or "jury-rigging". Origin of the
"jury" part is unclear, but it may have come from the Old French "ajurie",
meaning "help"
