When I was in the Navy ... (22 years before I decided not to make it a
career) ... the term "Jury Rigged" was commonly used, but I believe it
started out as "Jerry Rigged" in World War I. The Germans, whom we called
Jerry at the time, were known for making things work or at least trying to
make things work with the materials at hand. Anything rigged with anything
other than materials intended for that purpose were said to be Jerry rigged.
