Hi Larry,

The 914 Porsche shares the same block as the 72-83 bus and the 411/412. There are differences in the cam and heads, but the blocks are pretty much the same, other than filler tubes and dipstick locations. There were some differences in intake systems (D-Jet FI was used in early porsches and 411/412) but the core engines can be easily interchanged if you're not picky about the dipstick and filler tube. The Porsche is rated at close to 100HP, while the bus engines get something in the high 60's.

There's a Porsche-powered 1972 westy in Ottawa that Frank Condelli worked on, and another listed on TheSamba.com in Quebec. I owned a 72 westy with a Porsche engine in it back in 1986, it was a lot of fun on a logging road.
