They can be set up almost any way you want and some us car mfrs that I can think of have done just that on their own vehicles from year to year.

The main thing to remember that I havent seen mentioned is the wattage of your new system vs the wattage of the old system. You may need to change wiring and relays to work.

Saying that the two most common setups are

Low beam dedicated bulb inners High beam dedicated bulb outers.

Wiring for some is all lights on on high Others wire only high beam bulbs on at high.

If running all at once I highly recommend a rewire and replacing of relays.
