With a little work and trimming you could use the Bay Window Engine Seal, but it wouldn't last very long due to the higher heat the engine room generates on the Vanagon, verses the Bay Window Bus. I tried this on my Ex-80 Vanagon 7 Pass. back 10 years or so and wasn't happy that it melted, so I knuckled down and spent the extra bread for the correct seal, which I feel is a much stouter seal to begin with. I figure it this way, if the old style seal could truly work, Volkswagen would have continued using it on the air cooled Vanagons.

The local importing warehouse here in LA wholesales them to VW shops/parts places for $104.72, the dealer gets around $138, so $80 ($79.95 from Bus Depot as an example) is a heck of a deal on this seal. I'm sure Ron/Bus Depot brings them in direct to sell at this price.

Can a 1980 air-cooled 2.0 FI vanagon use the same the same engine bay seal (engine weatherstripping) as the bay window type 2? Can the bay window seal be modified to work? The vanagon seal is about $80 and the bay is about $25.
