You are mistaken. The only way a retailer can make a profit is to get the product to his customer in one piece. A retailer loses money every time a package arrives damaged. Insurance can defray that severity of the loss but does not cover it completely. It does not reimburse the lost profit, the time/money spent duplicating the order and processing the damage claim, the lost goodwill on the inconvenienced customer's part, or (in the case of mail) even the shipping charge on the package that got damaged. What's more, if using third party insurance, rates go up in proportion to number of claims, as with any other type of insurance.
