Couldn't people with 2wd vans use a syncro gas tank
and filler assembly?  It would unfortunately mean
cutting a hole in the body, but would use up that
"wasted" space above the tranny...  There could easily
be trickier ways of getting fuel to the tank, too,
without cutting a hole.
