The 185 in the 80 profile is good for either 5.5 or 6 inch The 195 is marginal good on 5.5 but marginal on 6 inch The 205 is marginal on the 5.5 but okay on the 6 inch The 205 that is listed as acceptable replacement for the 185r14 is 205/65r14

Also just noted something in the vanagon info site that might explain another problem with the tires. The 6 inch rim requires a higher load rating. Basically a D rated tire for the 6 inch and a C rated tire for the 5.5 inch.
