What type of DC motor? Is it permanent magnet, series field, shunt filed, combination? What. 1 HP, = 746 watts. Assuming 80%, you really need 932.5. At 12 volts, you need almost 78 amps to drive this thing. This means you need a 400 amp/hour battery to run this thing for any length of time. What are you operating with it? You will need a motor controller designed for the type of motor to vary the speed.

I have a 1 HP DC motor that I want to run on a car battery as opposed to using some sort of converter from AC to DC.

Anyone have any ideas as to how I might do this and control the motor speed?

Thanks,
