Hi John,

I assume yours is a 1.6l naturally aspirated Diesel. Unlike a turbo, (which can be made to always run with a large excess of oxygen), under full load the NA is set to use around 70% of available O2. (Diesels don't do better than that. DI's and turbos often run at 50%). Very small changes in spec can cause smoke at some rpms.

If it smokes under full load at all rpms, try to turn down the full load injection. If it just smokes a little under some rpm turning down might make you loose power in other rpms

With the NA's I often take the approach to set the full load injection as close as practical. Then while driving uphill or during long accelerations I often take a peek in the rearview mirrir and if there are any signs of smoke I back off on the accelerator just a bit.

Cheers, Martin

Hi Martin

I sent the following article to your Rochester address earlier today. Now that I see your present status, I realize that this connection may be a part of your life that is way behind you, but thought I'd forward just in case. if nothing else, you can see that your old work is still around. Cheers, John

Hi My name is John Greenman. In response to a question I had about injector pump timing, I was forwarded your article on Robert Bosch type VE Diesel Injection pump. My Rabbit runs well, the timing is to factor specs (I just set it), the injectors and air filet are new, but I still get some black smoke during heavy acceleration. It was suggested to me by the person who forwarded me your article that I adjust (turn in) the fuel load adjustment screw. My question is, would you concur? Could you recommend an increment for experimenting? 1/4 turn? 1/2 turn?

Thank you very much. I can also call to discuss if you would prefer. If so, please forward a number and good time to reach you. Thank you again, Sincerely, John A. Greenman (JAG)
