Dexron III is what they are up to these days, if the shelves of my FLAPS are any indication. Appears to be backwards compatible with II so I put some into Mellow Yellow's AT a couple days ago. That, along with standard servicing made a HUGE improvement. I had some questions about the thing so wrote a "Two Q's about Auto Tranny" post (9/28/04) which didn't create any public replies, but I did get one p-mailed response suggesting I use the Type F for crisper shifts as it has more "grabbers" in it.

But before dumping a mess of Type F down the ol' filler tube, I reckoned it might be smart to see what the Recognized Wisdom on this move is. I was pretty surprised to find that there was nothing at all in the Archives, pro or con, about running "Type F" in the AT.

I have learned that Dexron is not as friction-y as Type F, but, except for the one p-mail, haven't found out what happens, good or bad, if you use it in a Vanagon. And since there is not a large body of prior knowledge about this, I'm certainly not going to be the guinea pig . . . even if my experience ends up in the Archives to benefit future generations of readers!
