Subject: Re: Help with Frank's headlight relay upgrade
Comments: To: Leo Lipert <bajaleo@COX.NET>

Leo,

Your right! I had the same problem and I did email Frank and got timely responces but in the end all he said was read the instructions carefully, which I did over and aver again, and it still did not work (I'm not critisizing Frank, he is a great resource for the vanagon community, but there must be something different with the '84's, and his instructions do not work with them). Someone else had the same problem a few months ago. Anyway, what I ended up doing was look at my Bently and figured out what was going on, and I did some searches in the archives and found some good descriptions on what to do. In the end I figured out that the relays have to go in between the dimmer switch and the fuse box. So instead of putting the relays in the wires that go from the fuse box to the lights (which only brings power to the right side), you have to put the relays in the wires that go from the dimmer switch to the fuse box. The two wires (cannot remember the colors off hand but I think they were solid white and solid yellow) once they enter the fuse box get split to energise fuses 3&4 and 5&6. If you look at the wires going into fuses 3&4 and 5&6 from the side of the fuse box closest the you, you will see that only one wire feeds fuse 3&4 and one feeds 5&6. Those are the wires I'm talking about that you have to use instead of the two comming out at the front of the fuse box. I know this sounds confusing so feel free to pmail if you have any questions. I also found a vendor that had a good right up in this but cannot remember which one. Good luck.

On page 5, the "Installation Procedure for 1980 - 85 Vanagons", the fourth paragraph states "Next, find at the rear of fuse 4 the yellow w/black stripe wire that goes to the low beams of the head lights". The confusing part for me is that fuse 4 is only the right had side of the low beams. Fuse 3 handles the left side of the low beams. Same thing with your instructions in the next paragraph regarding fuse 6 and the wire that goes to the high beams. Fuse 6 is only for the right hand side of the high beams. Fuse 5 handles the left hand side of the high beams. For some reason it seems to me that following your directions I will only be relaying the right hand side of my headlight circuit. Please correct me if I am wrong! > >Thanks, Leo
