All Temperature Sensors Are Not Created Equal

I went to my (non-VW) FLAPS to buy a Blue Temperature Sensor. The one they sold me was roughly the same size and shape as the original but didn't look EXACTLY the same. Specifically, where the joints on the OEM one are pretty much right angles, the joints on the FLAPS one were more rounded. Having faith that the guts would be the same, I put it in. I have an oxy sensor meter hooked up for other reasons, and found that with this new sensor the engine didn't go into closed loop (fully warm) state for maybe ten minutes! This is much longer than I'm used to. The idle also stayed high for much longer than I was used to.

I got a sensor from the VW FLAPS. It looks EXACTLY like the OEM one I replaced originally, but without the VW numbers or logo stamped into the part. It also says "replaces 025 906 041A" on the box. That's my part number! Anyway, with that sensor installed, in the same weather, the van goes into closed loop after just a few minutes, like it should, and it only idles high for a few seconds.

Buyer beware!
