Dwight, My '91 does the same thing. Try leaving the hatch open, locking the front doors. Then go to the rear hatch and flip the locking arm closed. Now go unlock the front and you should be in sync.

I've had to repeat this a few times to get it to work. I suspect some sort of German Voodoo is at work here...
