Having done thousands of Bug and Van Engines since the early 60.s // I
always liked to have 140 or above for proper operation // You can also find out
where your problem tis by running what is known as a air test // you need to
purchase a threaded insert that fits into the plug threaded area // it is the
same end as your compression gauge or you can use a compression hose and adapt
the gauge end to a male adapter for a quick release that mounts to the end of
a air hose // your local parts stores should be able to help you with your
needs // You then need to bring up the cylinder that you wish to test to top
dead center // do the same for the other 3 // You will need to have a air
regulator on your air system starting at appox. 35lbs graudually increasing the
pressure till you hear AIR // Now you will have to remove the air intake boot to
listen to the intake system // open the throttle body the same as stepping
on the throttle at the pedal // If you hear air in the throttle body area your
intake valve is leaking // If you hear air coming out the exhaust your
exhaust valve is leaking // Take off the oil fill cap and listen in that area // if
so you have blowby which means your piston cylinder & rings are bad // last
is the mating area off the heads and cylinders > Loose heads > bad gaskets >
notch burn in head or cylinder will allow compression or air to be realeased
in the head zone . CAUTION You May Have more than one area leaking // You
probably wont find this in any service manual so Book mark it or Place it in
your favorites . If you have any questions feel free to give us a call to
discuss the procedures.
