2wd Models:
251 609 701 B or C 80-91 1473mm Overall Cable Length, Fits Left or Right
Syncro Models
251 609 701 D 86-91 1436mm Overall Cable Length, Fits Left Only
251 609 702 86-91 1390mm Overall Cable Length, Fits Right Only
OK, it *looks* like because the 2wd cables are so long that they would
*appear* to work, but there are a few factors here at play. It might have
to do with how the cables are routed (2wd vs. Syncro) and the actual length
of the Bowden Tube/Sleeve that the cables route through. The sleeves may be
too short or too long to allow for a proper installation between the two
models. Otherwise, VW would have used the same cable assembly for all
Vanagons.
As a further example, Beetles had 5 different cable assemblies from 58-79 on
the same basic chassis and Buses from 68-79 had 3 different cable assemblies
on the same basic chassis, many of them within just millimeters in the
difference of length, but different Bowden Tube/Sleeves lengths.
