Actually, it's been a year since I drove my 90 with an automatic, but I distinctly remember a slight whine in first gear. I don't know if they all do this, but I loaned the car to my brother and he drove it a few thousand miles. He eventually took it out and put in a 4 speed, but only because he wanted more performance. He's an ASI mechanic and went to VW, Porsche and Audi school in the 80's, so I think he'd have mentioned it if he felt there was something wrong. Al Brase Vanagons
