This might be a REALLY good idea for a spare. I've parted a few and carried the old pumps around for years. Once, I checked out one of these spares- it was LOCKED UP! If you get a new one, it's packed for long storage with plastic plugs or something. Probably the put some light oil in it to keep down the corrosion. If it's important that your spare actually works when you need it, maybe it's worth spending $149 to have one that works. Having said that, I've been driving at least one type 2 vehicle with one of these pumps continuously since 1982 and I've never had one fail. (Well- the one in the 80 westy locked up once. I reversed the polarity and got it freed up- it's still in there!) I'd figure at least 1/3 million miles on about 4 different vehicles. I don't lay awake nights worrying about fuel pumps!
