Wow, that's more than one engine rebuild per week for forty years. I find that hard to believe.....

You won't find it if you look for "air test" but if you search for "leak down test" you will find that its done all the time. Quite a common method for checking out an engine before deciding to tear it apart.

Its not like its some big secret or anything.

Mark, my man, you're saying Don is full of it with no basis other than what you find easy to believe. It's like me saying you are using the wrong orifice from which to speak. While I don't know you, I do know Don and I know he is a hardworking, honest and kindly guy. I missed the heyday of the Beetle, but every time over the past 15 years I have stopped by Don's there have been several Bugs being restored and I can't tell you how many engines in various stages of assembly. Recently, he was even prepping a car to be sent to Puerto Rico. So, believe him.

Perhaps you know a "leak down test" by name only, whereas Don has gotten all greasy and skinned his knuckles doing hundreds of "air tests". At least Don D. threw something edible into the stew.

George
