The fan runs when the little thermoswitch attached to the top of a fin says to come on. I believe it is 126 degrees F. It turns off when the fin temp drops to 108. The original fan is 0.6W, according to the manual. See: http://www.vanagon.com/info/articles/Refrigerator/Files/RM182B_Manual.pdf

So on a really cooking day in the desert, the fan might come on even if the fridge was not running. In my van, it only comes on when the fan is running and it is hot outside or that side of the van is in direct sunlight and getting very warm.
