Subject: Disconnecting the Oxygen Sensor
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Disconnecting the oxygen sensor connector is a good thing to remember.

When we first got our van, the J-pipe broke upstream of the oxygen sensor in the middle of a road trip. Just like Joy's van, mine ran fine when it was cold or first started hot. It would get worse and puff black smoke, misfire, etc. pretty fast, except at full throttle. So not knowing enough to disconnect the oxy sensor, we did the drive at full throttle or coasing. Not to mention it sounded like a Beetle, with no muffler!

I got the exhaust system fixed the next day and all was good again.

So: If it runs fine when cold and at full throttle, suspect your oxygen sensor. It's easy to unplug too: Green wire leading from the oxygen sensor (in the catalytic converter) has a spade connector in the engine bay. Undo this and you're good to go! (This is on the 2.1s)
