Subject: Using Bronco II fuel pump in Vanagon interchange
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

I got so excited when I read about Bronco II fuel pumps fitting in our Vanagons that I went to a FLAPS today to compare the two. The Bronco II in question is the 1986 to 1990 2.9L 6 cylinder model. The pump is the "in line" pump, not the in tank (transfer) pump. Also F150, F250, Ranger "in line" pumps should be the same. If you're hunting for one of these, watch out: There's a difference between Broncos and Bronco IIs. (I know nothing about Fords; just passing this on.)

Turns out

1) Their new cost is about the same (Both ~$180 Cdn) I would expect the used cost to be much lower for the Ford part.

2) They're not QUITE the same: The inlet (low pressure) side of the Vanagon pump has a dia. of ~0.470" and the little bulge that sticks out to grab the fuel line has a max dia. of ~0.525". On the Bronco II, the inlet dia. on the pump is ~0.310" and the bulge dia. is ~0.436". There are minor differences in the length and diameter of the pump body but they don't seem too important.

The Bronco II pump won't bolt in without making some kind of bushing or adaptor to get the diameter of the Vanagon's low pressure fuel line down to that of the Bronco's pump.

Happy hunting!
