The quick data specifications have been on the back cover of the Vanagon
manual since the 1982 edition. That is the oldest one I have in the
archive here. I would assume they have always been there, but they have
been modified and updated over the years.
We do have the words "always replace" under the torque spec. for the
water-cooled 2.1L conrod bolts on page 13.52. This was modified for the
7th printing of the Vanagon book back in Feb. of 1999. Previously the
words "always replace" were right under the spec. (45 Nm (33 ft lb)) for
the 1.9L. We moved "always replace" down lower underneath the torque
spec (30 Nm (22 ft lb) plus half turn) for the 1986 and later 2.1L
engine. This was done to clarify that the 2.1L stretch to yield conrod
bolts must always be replaced. I currently have 12 different editions of
the Vanagon manual in the archives! So I have a pretty good record of
what was changed and when, at least since I have been here.
We do not have the "always replace" words on the back cover Quick Data,
primarily because there is no room for it. I also would assume that any
decent mechanic is going to know that a bolt with a specification of
"plus whatever turn" will most likely be a one-time only use bolt.
The 1980-1991 Vanagon manual is now up for its 11th printing. It just
keeps going and going and going

I looked and could not find the torques specs for the conrod nuts. This is
a 2.1 L regular van. 87 model.
Also, I must say, I am flabbergasted to see that there is no torque listing
in the Bentley of all the bolts and nuts of importance on one page. I had
to gather all I needed for assembling the engine from fifty different pages,
hunting for the torque figures. Kind of non germanic arrangement. I
noticed that many essentials are missing or ignored or you just have to
guess. Oh vell... ve are not all the same.
