The vanagon had common ground speaker systems only through 1986. This was discussed extensively in a thread last October with many people reporting what system was in their vans of various years of manufacture. The consensus seemed to be that 87 was the first year without the common ground system. I don't think any major manufacturers make common ground systems anymore. And Mark Drillock supplied the seemingly definitive information writing: "The shared rear speaker ground appears to me to have ended with 1986 models. I own 2 1986 models with shared grounds and 2 1987 models with separate pairs for each rear speaker. The Bentley wiring diagrams show 1986 shared and 1987 on separate. Pages 97.193 and 97.196, latest version of the vanagon Bentley." My 84 and 85 both had common ground while it was not present in the 87 parts van.
