Subject: Fuel Hell...lllp
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"
I am having a very frustrating time with my fuel supply. Gas gauge does not
work, so I didn't observe my odometer well enough so it got low enough that
I was sucking rust water. Seems that fried my pump. So I put my spare in
from my 84.
Fuel filter was also totally blocked. Ended up having to get a NAPA fuel
filter $22 as I could not wait and that was walking distance. I also put
new fuel filter from my 84 between pump and tank. That took some
adjustments to get the line from big to little. It started and I made it
to the gas station.
Then my new replacement pump started singing like a cicada and boom - I was
stuck on the side of the road. I got it home and there still seems to be
rust and gas in the line. It clogged up the first filter pretty good and I
noticed about 10% water to gas in what I have drained off from tank.
Next I am going to remove pump and see if it works singing free. I will
test it by pumping gas from one container to the next. If that pump is now
shot, so am I - an new one is not in the budget til next week.
So here are my questions.
1. Can water in the gas screw up the pup mechanism?
2. Am I more likely overworking pump with a frequently clogged plastic
filter between tank and pump?
3. How do I get the water out - quickly? My idea now is (since car is
settled) to keep draining it into glass containers till I see that there is
no more water - and then put in water remover. Does that sound like a plan?
What is the best water remover?
4. Should I remove filter between pump and tank? If so - what is the hose
size - and how do I do that with a full tank and not enough containers to
hold it all. Is that a quick switch?
5. Fuel does pour out of the tank freely, but how do I tell if it is freely
enough?
Well that should be a start - I am off to the underworld.
Part II
While I am at it - seems that I have developed a pin hole leak in the top of
my water reserve tank. I will replace it with my spare from my 84 (It will
work right?) But that is an hour's drive and I can't drive right now. Is
there some sort of epoxy or cement that will stop that. I have been told by
100 people - throw Bars Leak in there and I obstinately refuse.
