Frank: I certainly agree with you there! Every Vanagon 2.1 engine I've seen with the oil warning buzzer coming on, HAD LOW OIL PRESSURE. Not a bad sensor. On my own vehicles, I've generally bought many more miles by using STRAIGHT weight 40 oil or 15w-50 Mobil one. NO other multi vis oils stand up to the intense demands that the waterboxer put on them. I don't think it's such a mickey mouse system! (BTW, I often see ebay ads for 2.1's saying they have bad oil prerssure sensors- bad $7 part. but they don't bother to fix it! Caveat emptor!)
