That sounds pretty extreme.

It is my understanding from many posts by list memebers over time, that the auto tranny is rebuildable with ordinary hand tools found in the typical home tool box. The manual tranny requires jigs to get it right. You might want to consider going the "do-it-yourself" route. Might take a bit of time the first go around, but you would certainly increase your ability to take care of your machine in the future, as you would have a beter understanding as to how things work and how to fix them. On the other hand, if time is of the essence, the hire the job done. I would recommend you contact Daryl at AA Transmissions - he'a listed on www.vanagon.com as a vendor/repair station. Get a quote from him. He's a good guy and will tell you straight.

Does anyone have good sources for used or rebuilt transmissions? I live in the SF bay area. My first conversation with an auto transmissions specialist was somewhat unsettling. He estimated that a rebuilt transmission will be $3,000 plus installation costs. Somehow, I'd like to think I can have this repair done for less money than that. Any help will be appreciated. >Tom LaLanne > > >
