Chris,

At least on my '87, I can lock the passenger side by pushing the button and
closing the door.  Holding in the handle doesn't seem to affect it one way
or the other, it locks either way.  What year is your Vanagon, and is it a
US model?

The driver side door won't let you lock it except with the key, to prevent
locking your keys in your car.  I defeated this on a couple of VW's before,
but I just left the Vanagon alone - I have come too close to locking the
keys in, and I still haven't got around to getting a spare key...
