Black Bear adolescent males travel incredible amounts of distance (as has been suprisingly discovered when they were tagged). Hundreds of miles is not at all impossible. Many moons ago a black bear was tranquilize darted in my mother's back yard in Bethesda Maryland. This was many scores of miles from the nearest traditional haunts (the Blue Ridge), across several interstate highways and one river (Potomac).

I remember the line a ranger in Glacier National Park had...don't bring tuna fish or sardines. Bears can smell them for miles.
