I've bought snow tires for this winter (plan to do a lot of cross-country skiing in Germany and Sweden) but still I'll be bringing chains... but I've got a 2WD.

My Transporter manual says about chains on Syncros that if at all possible you should use four of them. If you've only got two, then obviously mount them on the rear wheels.
