Just writing to say thanks for all your responses on this. I agree with Jeff S. that there can naturally be a lot of speculating in responses, but in vehicles that seem to be outliving the planned utility of their manufacturer, it's all we have. So any info can be useful, even if it is pretty subjective or dependent on unknowns in an engine's specific history.

It seems the broadest consensus seems to be about knowing your oil pressures and temps, and drive accordingly. So for me, anyway, I'm gonna move in that direction.
