Subject: Update:Sequoia,CA camping suggestions

Thanks for those who helped with suggestions, advice, etc. Some of you asked for and update on how the trip went--a one day summit of Mt. Whitney.

Well it went great. The one-day summit was a success! The catch is I wasn't there (LOL)!

I got called to NYC for work and so had to bow out of the Mt. Whitney trip.

My buddy pressed on solo to Sequoia. He made the one day summit of the Mt. Whitney peak, the tallest peak in the lower 40 at 14,000 and change. Maybe like 14, 600?

Anyway, for those planning to hit the trial in the future, he left at about 5 a.m. and hit the peak at about 2 pm. (This guy is in pretty good shape, by the way. After hearing how brutal the hike was for him, I'm secretly glad I had to bail out) As some of you pointed out you need a permit to hit the trail. Apparently he got the pass the same day and it was free--$15 for advanced purchase.

My buddy said it was a brutal hike and went pretty slow above 12,000 due to altitude slowing progress. He went from the shorter trial head which I believe is to the east of the peak. I think route is generally used for a two day hike. It's something like 20 miles round trip and a 6,000 foot gain.

Anyway for me, NYC was great. I'll have to get to Mt. Whitney after the winter.

Thanks for all the help on the way to the aborted trip.

Best Jeff 83.5 Westfalia LA,CA
