This doesn't really address the thread at hand but does relate to the above comment. 3 years ago I was headed from Salt Lake to a campground near Prescott, AZ. At about midnight, going through the Cedar Breaks area on 89 I came across Elk. There were 4-5 and they were maybe 100-150 yards ahead when I saw them. By the time I got stopped they were moving off the road edge and were 50' maybe away. It was then that I could see that if I hit one, it wouldn't just dent the front of the van, the animal would be in my lap and I'd be smooshed up against the rear hatch. They are so long-legged that their body is windshield height. Imagine Moose would be the same. Gave me a different perspective and my caution has given me safer nighttime miles in that kind of environment. There is a stretch of 6/191 between Price, UT and I-70 heading south that begs to be used as an acceleration stretch and I've peaked over 100 a couple times. The way my van is set up that's comfortable and smooth, but not something I do regularly. Just too fast for this old cowboy.
