I removed my shifter knob to install new sleeving on the shaft, and found a dab of sylicone seal. I did not replace this. Now I noticed that the knob itself makes a small high pitch noise. If you rest a finger on the knob, the noise stops. I guess that sylicone was there for a reason. My be this is the same with yours. Eric
