Yeah --- I think it's worth it. If you have a really good guarantee. Seam rust is very nasty. I'd want at least a 2 year guarantee (I'd rather have a lifetime one). Get a 2 year guarantee from the body shop--- and buy their lifetime guaranteed rust-proofing. Make sure they know what you're doing. If I could get my van done for 3 grand plus rustproofing (including the annual fee for renewing the rustproffing) I'd do it in a heartbeat. I you can have a good rust-free van with a perfect body for $6000 --- I'd say that's a good deal.

My 2 cents (Cdn)

Cheers, Doug

Subject: new member--85 Westy

Hi all,

After wishing for one for many years, a few weeks ago I purchased a 1985 Vanagon Westy, 4-speed, 138,000 miles, head gaskets done, radiator replaced, decent tires, interior in decent shape, body straight--except (here's the rub) for some rust in the usual spots along the seams, under the water and electrical connections and windshield.

I just got an estimate of $3,000 for the rust repair and complete repainting--if I do that I will have around $6,000 into it.

What do list members think--is it worth the investment?

Please forgive the newby question!

cheers, jc
