If it is a Vanagon that you truely love, and you can't see yourself parting with the Van anytime soon, go for the gusto and get disk brakes in the rear.

I used to do a lot of stuff with baywindow busses, and a buddy of mine who put a 913-6 (911) engine in his 76 bus switched out the rear drums to disks. -It was a major difference. The bus really seemed to have more linear stopping, and it made the van so much more sporty when you could rely on the brakes that much more..
