The additional weather stripping in the later model vanagons "fills" in the leading edge door gap. The earlier vans used that gap to create the low pressure are to draw air out of the vents in the door. I can believe that this is source of wind noise.

So the additional door weather stripping and the rear side window flow through vents go hand in hand.
