I had something similar when the cable broke. Sometimes the two ends of the cable would mesh and the speedo worked, other times the speedo clock end stayed put and the cable from the wheel turned, one rubbing aginst the other was making a noise.

Push in your trip odometer button. It may be partially engaged and cause the gears to be snicking....
