Years ago while stationed in okinawa I worked part time for a local computer
company (made PC clones based on V20 chip). Our boards were gotten from a
Taiwanese plant. We got a really bad batch in and the replacements were
just as bad. The boss sent me and the Okinawan senior tech to taiwan to
personally visit the plant. We arrived unannounced and the plant manager
had a severe heart attack when we asked to visit the line that was in
production on that day making our next batch of boards. Seems the inspector
for that section had retired and not been replaced yet. They were going out
with no quality checks. Turned out that same section also made the boards
for our two top competitors as well. We called them and found we were all
getting uninspected crap instead of our normal high quality boards. I know
our company went into renegotiation of contracts and I think the other two
did as well. What is good one day may be crap the next.
