They are using optical fibers to transport what is "behind" an object
to what is in "front" of it with carefully routed fibers, making it
seem you're looking through the object. How well the alignment in the
"front" matches the "back" is responsible for the integrity of the
image, of course. I saw a show on the science channel or similar, it's
incredible, like the Predator in the Schwarzenegger movie.
Also, they're using a very reflective foil to reflect surroundings,
which works pretty well out in the woods or an open field.
The best optical military trick I've heard of is like the LA plant
trick mentioned below. My dad has always told me about a german
ball-bearing plant that the allies would pound into oblivion all night,
only to find it operational the next day. The germans had flown over
their own town in blackout conditions, and photographed the light leaks
from chimneys and missing roof tiles. This they reproduced in a cow
pasture out side of town, which the allies were blasting away at.
