I had a knock like this one you describe. I took my van to my mechanic and he spent a lot of time testing the van on the road, came back in and said he believed the knock was something in the rear brake knocking. I decided to leave it alone for a while. A week or so later the knock could also be heard loudly when going up a long grade. About that time, the new CV's I had ordered came in. I figured I had a CV about to fail so I bought new ones, as this was the first time to ever service the CV's - at least with me as the the new owner. When I went to work to remove the CV on the right side - outboard - I discovered that half the bolts were loose. So, my suggestion is that you first check your CV bolts for security. You need to get the vehicle up off the ground to do this by jacking it up with the frame and letting the running gear just hang free. Then check the torque on the bolts. If secure, move to the next stage - probably replacing the CV's. CV replacement is not difficult, just takes a little time. There are instructions and pictures on the net about thow to do this if you haven't done it before. If you go to www.vanagon.com you can probably find a link to some of those sites.
