Chuck: I have given up on film photography but that is not to say that I have given up on Black & White photograpphy. Many/most digital cameras will take black and white photos and at varying levels of contrast and saturation (not to mention being able to 'bracket' (exposure and contrast and saturation) the exposure in camera. PhotoShop (and others) can deal with B&W digital immages in VERY creative ways and you have all of the cut and paste (& layers) tools at your disposal. ALso PhotoShope (and others) can deal with the red/blue/green layers separately to give stunning B&W images that can not (or difficult to) capture on B&W film. If you'd like, send a p-mail to me and I'll send some B&W images to you. Try google.com for

"digital black and White photography" gallery B&W

for instance I found this:

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/digital_black_white.html

and there is a Yahoo Groups (a listserv) just for digital to B&W prints at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint/ You may want to read some of the archives prior to joining the group to see if it interests you.

FWIW I use a Nikon CoolPix 5400 and I'm about to tradeup to the Nikon CoolPix 8400M, not so sure I'll go digital SLR. Try: http://www.dpreview.com/articles/nikoncp8400/

Oh yes, your 'darkroom' becomes your lap-top computer. :-)

Enjoy, and keep an open mind. IMHO it's all about creativity and not about film vs digital. M
