I think you guys misunderstood the question. I think he wants to put an "aircooled diesel engine" into an early loaf. Only 1975 and older are smog exempt due to age in Calif, i.e. pre smog. The only Vanagons exempt are those registered as diesels already. He asked if the 80s diesel motors are type 4 based and of course they are not. The cooling system parts from a Vanagon would be of little use in a loaf. By the way, 80s VW diesels have no computer. It only take 1 wire for the engine system to run, +12 with the key on to the fuel shutoff valve on the injection pump.
