Just to follow up and for the sake of the archives, I ended up purchasing two books:

1. HOW TO KEEP YOUR VOLKSWAGEN ALIVE 2. FIXING CARS, A PEOPLES PRIMER

The second I totally love so far, it was written in the early 70's by a group of self taught mechanics in San Francisco, I've been told it's not that easy to come by but if you can get your hands on a copy it's well worth it.
