Subject: Re: That Audiovox Cruise Control
Comments: To: Rocket J Squirrel <j.michael.elliott@ADELPHIA.NET>

I recently installed an Equus 9000-B cruise control in my '85 Westy 4 speed. It is very similar to the Audiovox.

I installed a vacuum canister at the same time as the CC unit, so I don't know how it would've performed without it. I've yet to find a hill that will kick out the cruise control, but I have, on steep ones, had to effectively shut it down by downshifting to 3rd to keep from lugging the engine.

I used beaded chain to attach the servo's cable to the Westy's throttle. That part was a piece of cake. While I had my transmission out for a new clutch, I drilled a hole in the bracket that holds the van's throttle cable for attachment of the servo cable bracket. Knowing that I was going to install cruise control, it was just easier to do it at that time.

I didn't install the servo in the engine bay. I put it under the van on the driver's side ... just about under the rear heater, but outboard from it a bit.

The vacuum canister is one I got from salvage ... from a ford I think ... and I installed it forward of the firewall ... down low on the driver's side.

The only things you can see in the engine compartment, related to the CC installation, are the chain to the throttle, the vacuum hose going forward through the firewall, and the wire coming back through the firewall to the coil.

You didn't say if you're installing into a van with automatic or manual trans. If you're installing it into one with automatic and you're using the magnetic speed sensors that attach to the CV joint, then follow the directions for "Front wheel drive".

If you want pictures, just ask and I'll take some.

Mike
