Since the problem was intermittent, it probably was not a bad sensor but a bad connection. Disconnecting and reconnecting probably fixed it. I would replace the connector and contacts.

I have had the dreaded Vanagon syndrom for the last 4,000kilometers.Sometimes it would stumble during the final phase of the warmup and sometimes it would hiccup after an hour of driving.> Finally it got really bad during the last 100 kilometers of a 1000 Kilometer run. But you know how these things are..... during a 20 minute test run the next morning it ran perfectly. THEN a check of the fuel regulator revealed that the vacuum control hose had a crack in it and had actually fallen right off the fuel regulator.

So I replaced the bad vacuum hose and all was well for three days and then after a 10 minute run it would not even restart. I finally got it to my mechanic about two blocka away and the bloody thing RAN PERFECTLY again. However luck was with me and after about 10 minutes it refused to start and failed right in front of the mechanic. YIPPEE!! He quickly determined it had fuel pressure , the injectors were injecting and the spark was sparking . He swapped the cable for the Temp II sensor to a new sensor and it started immediately and ran perfectly.

The new TempII sensor is now installed and the Westfalia runs much more smoothly than before and seems to have more power. It has not failed once in the last week of daily driving and is once again a joy to drive. I am going to check the mileage because I think it will be better.

It is SO NICE whan they run well EHHH!

Its a 90 Westy GL in the Toronto area
