Jeff,

Sounds like the fan switch on the radiator has gone bad (pretty common). It could something else, but that's where I'd start.

The fan switch is a three pronged circular unit that screws into the radiator. Pull the wires off the switch and see if your fan still runs. If it doesn't run anymore, you've found the culprit. A new switch is only $15.97

If you're coming through Sacramento on your way to Portland, give me a call and we'll take a look.

Good Luck,

I was hoping to have a funny story or something as my first post instead of needing help, but here goes. I have a 1984 Vanagon Camper that I've been driving across country the long way from Chicago to Portland, which means I'm now in San Diego, CA. I just bought this van in August, and all has been great.. one alternator issue, and a flat tire.. performed some TLC on it, replaced the intake manifold boot, and did an oil change about 1,000 miles back. This morning in the mountains outside San Diego, it started raining reallly hard, and I headed out to avoid the winter storm warning and flooding. I stopped at a Park and Ride and had the car idling for a bit to let the heater kick in, and then turned the engine off and just listened to the radio for a while. All of a sudden the radiator fan just kicked on... I thought maybe that it would just cycle and stop, as it usually does, but it was unusual that the engine was off.. Well it won't cut off now it just runs constantly even with the engine off and the key out. I ended up taking out the fuse when I'm stopped and that turns it off of course. It actually sounds louder now too. 3 questions: 1. What could have caused/be causing this? 2. Is it serious? 3. What would be the result of running the fan constantly while driving and then taking out the fuse when stopped to turn it off? (short term solution to get me to my destination in Portland next week. my theory is that some sort of relay may have gotten stuck or affected by the water, but I'm not knowledgeable enough to know where to start. Thanks for your help. I've tried to search the archives but keep timing out.. it seems to be huge. Jeffrey S. 84 ft.
