It'll be better than nothing but you can use cuticle remover and strip the
rust first. NO I'm not kidding.

I have a small dent with rust.  Someone suggested I sandpaper off rust, then
add clear fingernail polish to bare  metal to prevent further rust.  Will
fingernail polsih do the trick?

Eventually I will paint but for now I just want to stop more rust.
