I mounted my 2m Yaesu FT2400H in a sort of unconventional way.

I tore apart a regular Vanagon (not the short Westy) seatbelt receiver,
discarding the old plastic assembly until I had just the metal bar. Drilled
out the receiver hole to 7/8" and painted it black. I then mounted a unit
similar to this (

with a short extension section. It took a few mods, removed the base, but
came out rather well.

This assembly then bolts in sandwiched to the passenger side seatbelt
receiver in the seat pedestal, and does not interfere with the receiver for
regular seatbelt use. Admittedly, having two receiver "bars" in one bolt
hole may somewhat compromise the seatbelt safety efficacy, but it seems as
solid as stock. The additional thickness doesn't appear to be an issue.

This places the radio just behind the passenger seat but angled toward the
driver for easy access. Also makes a short journey to the battery and
antenna lead. I don't use the seat swivel, so that's not a problem for me.
The only complaint I have is some vibration that is amplified because of the
length of the mounting. I'd suppose I could cut that by 50% by using some
rubber bushings.
