Just another piece of gingerbread with no purpose added by VW! Replace with a rubber cord; remove it and its just fine! Aargh!

The chrome strip is inexpensive and available at Bus Depot (or at lease it was). Takes the same amount of time to replace as putting in an extruded rubber core. After the second window and a little soap solution, it takes less than 10 minutes per window.

In the archives, I've posted some crude tests that show the window retention force is reduced when the strip is removed. Didn't check for leaks. Probably no leakage problem with older hardened and oxidized installations, unless you are already marginal (near a leak onset).
